JPRE Check Writer

Here's a cheat code for anyone who hates preparing checks.

In the RE world, we deal with a lot of checks. They could be post-dated checks for rent payments or the purchase of pre-selling properties. And with banks not allowing erasures, check preparation can be a complete pain. That's why some clients have their brokers write the check details for them.

I'm sharing a spreadsheet I made for a BPI checkbook. You may download it here:

Users can edit the date, the payee, and the amount in figures in the spreadsheet. The amount in words is automatically generated. 👍🏻

Note that this spreadsheet is specific to printers and bank checks. The spreadsheet in that link is specifically for BPI and my HP Deskjet 3777. I tried using the spreadsheet on my other printer (Canon Pixma IP110), and the row heights were off (columns were okay). So, I adjusted the row heights so that the name would be printed at the same location where the amount in words was printed. The final product is the second check in the image.

You'll have to tweak the columns and rows to suit your particular check and printer. To avoid wasting checks while fine-tuning the measurements, print the text in different colors after each adjustment so you know which is the latest one. I follow the R-O-Y-G-B-I-V order.

You'll just have to set it up once, and after I assure you, check preparation will be a breeze. You also probably want to let the ink dry on the check for a few seconds to avoid blotting.

What if the information is slightly misaligned? Will banks still accept it (e.g., the date is not perfectly in the boxes provided)?

From experience, yes. If you notice, even Manager's Checks are sometimes misaligned, and they're accepted without any problem.

Enjoy.
